I'm an Australian software engineer and tweet as lisa dp.
The latest DIY projects I've done were the design and construction of a roofless pergola on to which we retrained an existing grapevine, the removal of a patch of paving in favour of an irrigated lawn, and the installation of a built-in dishwasher!
Having followed Spolsky and Atwood's podcasts from when Stack Overflow (and the entire Stack Exchange) was just a twinkle in their eyes, I'm truly impressed at just how well it works. In time, we'll realise just how revolutionary Stack Overflow is/was.

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thank you. You're starting to convince me. My partner was really keen on this approach when I mentioned it too. |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? When you say "run conduit" what kind of conduit do you mean? Wikipedia mentions 14 kinds, admittedly only some of these relevant to private dwelling scenario. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_conduit#Types_of_conduit |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thanks for this. I considered this option but rejected it partly because I don't understand how it affects or is affected by noise from electrical appliances or anything else connected to the same wiring. And seems over-complicated for what I want to achieve. That said, I acknowledge this will be the future solution to network cabling when mature. |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thanks, really useful. But is the foam strictly necessary? What are the disadvantages of not using this? |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thirdly, it looks like your home hardware stores in America are awesome and much better stocked for people who want to do basic stuff for themselves! |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Secondly, I doubt the wall contains insulation, but will know as soon as I create the hole in the wall for the 'wall plate'. |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thank you. This and ChrisF cover my needs. Marking this as the answer because it provides the level of detail I clearly need. (Thanks for understanding I did not know it was called a top plate). |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thanks. How long do you think the drill bit would likely need to be? I have a 9mm timber drill bit which could go through 100mm or more. The house is in Australia and was built in 2004 so all modern. |

How do I run ethernet cable through a wall cavity? Thanks for advice so far. I take from this that the pale brown thing in my picture is called the top plate. My concern is about where I drill down through that and how thick I should expect the top plate to be. Or perhaps this is trivial. |
