comment How soon can I use my shower that I recently grouted and tiled? Should it cure first?
We only have the single bathroom, and ended up hanging 0.9mil sheeting (the thinnest plastic painter's dropcloth we could find) over the walls with regular painter's tape. It was a little annoying to have all of that extra plastic hanging around you while you showered (the worst part was turning the shower knobs). It's been a year and a half and we've had no problems with the grout at all.

comment How can I get rid of ants in an environmently friendly way?
@eidylon Glad to hear it worked - our mailman stopped delivering our mail on trash days because the trashmen kept putting the empty bins right in front of our mailbox (which is not where we left them full of trash). We kept getting passive-aggressive notes left for us by our carrier, so now the trash is on the other side of the driveway.

comment What's the best way to protect myself from a rental house?
That's what we did when we used to rent an apartment - we took pictures before we moved in, burned them to a CD and stuck it in a kitchen cabinet, and forgot about it until we moved out, and there it was.

comment Why does water come from toilet supply when water to house is shut off?
This is the case with my house (single-level slab) as well - I have to open the tub spout and it takes forever to drain the standing water. I'm not clear on the mechanics of it, but I have to shut off the out valve for the water heater as well as the water main. The plumber who installed our water heater a few years back got tired of waiting for the water to drain and plugged the dripping pipe he was working on with a chunk of bread. It stopped the water long enough to solder a joint, and when the water was back on, the pressure broke it up with no problem.

comment Gap in sealant round edge of bath, mould underneath, what to replace with
They can stink, but always use silicone-based caulking, not the latex stuff. I can't figure for the life of me the point of latex caulking - it seems to be inferior in every way to silicone.
