I'm a UX specialist investigating analysis and design of multi-user interaction. I specialize in design of CLIs and GUIs for use by programmers, QEs, and release engineers.

My doctoral work centered around using discourse analysis techniques to understand design requirements for groupware. I am currently employed helping to design a complex versioning/building/testing system.

In my spare time, I write science fiction; my first novel Duplicate is available as an eBook, paperback, or hardcover. My second novel, We Were Gods is also available as an eBook or paperback. Yes, there's a fair amount of programming and user experience in each of them. ;)

My statements on these websites are not official statements from any employer of mine.

comment Can I hang a heavy weight from a concrete ceiling if I reinforce it with fiberglass?
Warning: for a pull-up bar, you do NOT need to just support 200lb. You need to support the dynamic load of grabbing the bar, hanging from it, swinging from it, etc. This works out to many times the static load; I don't know the conversion, but 5x may be a starting point.

comment Why would plastic anchors pull out of the wall?
Flaky wall material can also cause failure. I have some horsehair plaster walls that simply will NOT support anchors no matter what I use--they're basically compressed dust held together with paint after 100 years.

I would NOT recommend using drywall screws for sheer loads. They are fragile and prone to stress failures--this led to a number of high-profile injuries(/deaths?) some years back. For hanging guitars with that many screws it's probably fine--but for a structural application, use the appropriate fastener. In your case nails into the stud would probably have worked just fine, and nails are much better at supporting sheer loads...

comment What is this kind of security bolt head called, and how can I remove it?
You can also gang two thin screwdrivers together by clamping them between a pair of pieces of wood (to keep the alignment). If it's really stubborn, cut grooves in the wood so the screwdrivers don't spill.

comment Best review sites/web resources for finding a contractor?
This is incorrect. Angie's List allows you to post bad (or good) feedback in the form of vetted reviews. Most contractors take this feedback very seriously as reviews determine what other users see.
