Raised by a carpenter with a physics degree, I claim lots of booklearnin' but only the usual "amateur" experience level. Take my advice with the same grain of salt you'd take any random voice on the internet!
My statements on these websites are not official statements from any employer of mine.

How can you reverse a sliding glass door? Yeah, it's definitely not upside-downable unless I am not seeing something obvious. :-/ |

How to fix small holes in a wall caused by throwing darts? You may need to sand the holes flush before applying the spackle. Dart holes may have a raised pucker around the edges (ask me how I know) from where the dart pushed the surface aside. Depends on what you threw them into... |

How can I stop a draft from an attic hatch lid? Also, they sell styrofoam shells that fit over your hatch and help insulate from the back. This might cut down on conductive heat loss. |

Can I use a small pond with a water source heat pump? Lawrence, consider asking this on the Gardening And Landscaping site. There are a number of questions about ponds there. |

Can I turn a 4 X 4 deck post, eight feet high, into a 6 x 6 post by laminating a 2 X 6 and 2 X 4 to it? Vebjorn, do those load numbers include supporting a heavy snow load? Given the OP's location I would be concerned about that. |

Is a bedframe necessary to keep a boxspring & mattress in good working order? Price is sadly no indicator of quality. Likewise, the box spring itself may be of poor quality, and may have killed the mattress. You should look into getting a refund--your mattress may have a warranty. |

How can I shorten barstools temporarily so I can reattach the bottom of the legs? Just make a conical cut and you'll be able to screw the legs back together, plus having better support for the joint when you reattach it. I have no idea how to do this, of course; perhaps mount each leg in a lathe and waste away an angled notch with the thinnest cutter you can find. Or...buy a spare set of stools. |

What could cause polyurethane to dry with excess gloss? +1 for "make sure to get the finish well-mixed". If you used up the lighter half of the finish last time, and it was matte, now you might be left with the super-glossy rest of the ingredients. |

How can I make this stair rail less slippery? Polyurethane might work. It can be a bit grippy. Try it on a smooth wood rood first before painting your whole handrail. |
