I'm a UX specialist investigating analysis and design of multi-user interaction. I specialize in design of CLIs and GUIs for use by programmers, QEs, and release engineers.

My doctoral work centered around using discourse analysis techniques to understand design requirements for groupware. I am currently employed helping to design a complex versioning/building/testing system.

In my spare time, I write science fiction; my first novel Duplicate is available as an eBook, paperback, or hardcover. My second novel, We Were Gods is also available as an eBook or paperback. Yes, there's a fair amount of programming and user experience in each of them. ;)

My statements on these websites are not official statements from any employer of mine.

comment How do I keep drawer knobs from loosening over time?
Loctite is the way to go. I did this in our kitchen in a fit of pique and it fixed everything. Make sure the handle's wood is still in good condition first, however. (You can use superglue as a hack to firm up the wood if it's gotten squishy.)

Great question.

comment How can I prevent mice from entering my house?
Eliminate the food source, kick out or kill the mice that are in the house, seal up the obvious gaps, and learn your lesson about keeping food sealed up.

comment How do I put on siding above a slanted roof?
Roofers use temporary cleats to give themselves a secure support. I'm not sure how they work (nailed under the shingles?) but that, plus building up under one leg of the ladder, might be secure enough. Or go pro; this is dangerous stuff.

comment How do I drill additional holes for adjustable-height shelving?
You can make a "jig" yourself--drill a hole down a dowel, slightly larger than your drill bit. Cut the dowel down to the length you need, so that only 1/4" or 1/2" of bit sticks out the stop. Slide it over the bit. Instant drill stop, no investment required.

comment Why should I use advanced nails instead of wood screws for strength?
@sharptooth, have you seen someone with a nail gun? If they're not doing 1 nail per second, they are lollygagging. When you need to do thousands of nails per roof, 1 second vs. 4 seconds is a huge difference.

comment Does a homeowner need a permit for electrical work in Massachusetts?
Great points; I hadn't considered if that was written with a contractor in mind.

comment What is the proper way to run wires along/across basement ceiling joists?
Sweet, thank you for updating the info there. I mean, I would love to save on electrician labor myself...just want to stay legal too.

You live in MA, and sadly this means you need to have the work done by a licensed electrician...

And if you're sure there's no asbestos, vacuum out that duct...looks half clogged.
