I'm a UX specialist investigating analysis and design of multi-user interaction. I specialize in design of CLIs and GUIs for use by programmers, QEs, and release engineers.

My doctoral work centered around using discourse analysis techniques to understand design requirements for groupware. I am currently employed helping to design a complex versioning/building/testing system.

In my spare time, I write science fiction; my first novel Duplicate is available as an eBook, paperback, or hardcover. My second novel, We Were Gods is also available as an eBook or paperback. Yes, there's a fair amount of programming and user experience in each of them. ;)

My statements on these websites are not official statements from any employer of mine.

comment How can I protect my hands when using power tools?
+1. Gloves are for hand tools. If you're using a power tool, the tool should be doing the work, not your hands.

comment Why is my house humidity at 80%?
Adding insulation to the underside of your floors might help. I think you can staple a vapor barrier right to the joists from below, if you want double protection.

Cannot stress how important it is to be under the mold cut-off! (60-65%)

Do you ever use a shield (held with the other hand) to mask off the adjacent area?

comment Why does my toilet keeps blocking and then spill out of the drain outside?
Plumbing has a risk of contaminating public water supplies with fecal matter. You don't want to be responsible for getting an entire block sick (or potentially dead). If this becomes a possibility, that's a good flag for when you should stop DIYing and call in a professional.

comment What adhesive or glue should I use to attach velcro to PVC pipe?
Yeah, good point. I was assuming framing given the nature of the task, but that's not guaranteed...

comment Why are my deck boards of uneven width?
This doesn't mean they were stored in lengths of exactly 12 feet. Some of the boards may have been stacked in with 8' lengths.

Dunno what else, but pay attention to that staining around the sewage line...you don't want sewage leaks into your basement!

Wow. And don't buy the blind from the same manufacturer...no parts, no service, and no warranty!

comment How do I secure my house against intruders?
@sharptooth cleaning up appliance boxes is a good step to take. Or reuse them, or save 'em. For some reason large-screen TVs make people go crazy.

comment What projects should never be DIY?
@Joe, I think you mean "projects where you can't stop midway". This is an old rule from car repair, too. ;) ("Have a spare vehicle on hand." is harder to do with houses)

comment How do I keep drawer knobs from loosening over time?
Loctite is the way to go. I did this in our kitchen in a fit of pique and it fixed everything. Make sure the handle's wood is still in good condition first, however. (You can use superglue as a hack to firm up the wood if it's gotten squishy.)

Great question.
