I'm a UX specialist investigating analysis and design of multi-user interaction. I specialize in design of CLIs and GUIs for use by programmers, QEs, and release engineers.

My doctoral work centered around using discourse analysis techniques to understand design requirements for groupware. I am currently employed helping to design a complex versioning/building/testing system.

In my spare time, I write science fiction; my first novel Duplicate is available as an eBook, paperback, or hardcover. My second novel, We Were Gods is also available as an eBook or paperback. Yes, there's a fair amount of programming and user experience in each of them. ;)

My statements on these websites are not official statements from any employer of mine.

And to bring closure--was able to install it myself with no significant problems. Lots of time with a basin wrench.

In fact, contacting Toto directly worked--a replacement (the original model is no longer manufactured) is on its way!

comment How do I restore the original finish of a reglazed plastic tub?
The old spray likely failed because of insufficient prep or poor application. So a respray may work better--if you put in the elbow grease to prep the surface.

comment Is it possible to find 4“ x 8” lumber?
How do you plan on preventing checking and cracking? Keeping thin bits of end-grain dimensionally stable is going to be very challenging, and much more challenging the larger the base wood. This is why end grain floors often use very old wood that has had time to settle down--starting with wood from Home Despot is going to be very young and much more susceptible to movement. Contact a lumber yard and see if they have old stock.

comment What are the structural and health issues for a long-time slow-leaking toilet?
@Flimzy It's dangerous to think mold will 'go away'. Instead at best it will spore over, going into a state where it can live for years until another bit of humidity reactivates it. You need to mechanically remove as much of it as you can, and then use a dilute solution of bleach to try to kill the parts you can't see. See this guide for more detail: cdc.gov/mold/cleanup.htm

Look into a 'swamp cooler', especially since it's likely very humid. diy.stackexchange.com/questions/6895/…
