I've been doing software development since college. I do woodworking as a hobby and will tackle just about any home improvement task when the need arises. I can only imagine how difficult is used to be to learn DIY stuff before the interweb.

How can I fix my toilet valve so I can stop jiggling the handle after flushing? Make sure the chain between the lever and flapper isn't kinked or too short. Also make sure it's not too long or it can drop under the flapper preventing a proper seal. |

What is the best way to calculate the angle at which crown moulding should be cut? I'll defer to lazoDev on the angle to cut. A 45 probably is too steep a cut. 38 probably is the better choice. I'll edit my answer. |

How do you remove paint and rust from outdoor chairs? That's what we did with our outdoor metal table and chairs. Used a wire brush to smooth the rust spots and then used the Rustoleum textured paint. The texture helps hide the imperfect spots where there's chipping or rust and the furniture looks brand new. Get a "spray grip" if you use aerosol cans. Easier to control the paint and won't fatigue your fingers. |

What is the best way to shorten legs on a table and chairs? If you remove too much of a curved chair leg, you may run into issues of the chair being unstable. The curved leg gives the chair support and you might find that it tips backwards easier. |

Workarounds for single-zone HVAC? Second thermostat? Adjust vents? @B Mitch - Ah Ha! So there IS something duct tape can't fix. I knew it! :) |

Workarounds for single-zone HVAC? Second thermostat? Adjust vents? Well, what I've heard (take this for what it's worth) is that if you cover returns but not vents, you'll increase the air pressure in the room, thereby forcing the "conditioned" air into unsealed room crevices and possibly out of the house. I've also heard people say covering vents and returns make your unit work harder. As far as whether it works, I don't really know. There's too many variables in the equation. Maybe MythBusters has the answer. |
