A fellow DIYer and amateur woodworker I like working on home projects when I'm not sitting in front of a computer.

comment Can you do electrical work yourself in the UK?
@ChrisF The reason I say it's to protect future owners is because we (as free people) shouldn't allow laws that take away our freedom UNLESS that freedom imposes on someone else's freedom. That's a discussion for a different site though!

comment How do I get started with dovetail joints?
Why dovetails? With modern glues even a butt joint is really strong. For drawers I put a rabbit in the front back parts and then use a dado on the sides (and the bottom for the 1/4 inch plywood bottom). And sometimes I just use butt joints and Dominos for strength and ease of putting them together.

I'm always amazed at how many things you are not supposed to do at your own house because of permits. I get that the laws are there to protect the next owner but it's crazy when you feel like it's your house but you need a permit for the simplest thing. And the worst part is that it's so hard to figure out what is okay to do and what's not.

Yeah, I kinda laughed at the chisel option . . . even on a small wall why mess with little hand tools when you can use a giant sledge hammer!

The additional complexity does add maintenance issues but as long as a diy homeowner can do the work himself why not to save on the electric bill, right?

Nice link! Never seen anything like it before but glad I'm not the only one thinking about it.
