A fellow DIYer and amateur woodworker I like working on home projects when I'm not sitting in front of a computer.

Quickly heating and cooling the concrete could cause cracks would be my guess.

Never heard of a "french drain". I'll check that out.

Well, mine is rectangular too but the yard is small and the 18 inches or so of cool deck around the pool is the only way to go from one side of the house to another so I'd have to remove the pool cover just to move my mower from one side of the house to another.

comment How do I test a furnace limit switch?
Scary. I would be scared the fan was going on because there was still heat that needed to dissipate and it's cycling on and off because it cools to the right temp and then heats back up and then the fan pops on again to cool it down.

Good point about how painting it will mean it's not a "cool deck" anymore. I don't like the idea of paint anyway . . . it's a temporary solution though I guess everything is temporary but real cool deck will last longer than paint/epoxy.

@ChrisF The reason I say it's to protect future owners is because we (as free people) shouldn't allow laws that take away our freedom UNLESS that freedom imposes on someone else's freedom. That's a discussion for a different site though!

comment How do I get started with dovetail joints?
Why dovetails? With modern glues even a butt joint is really strong. For drawers I put a rabbit in the front back parts and then use a dado on the sides (and the bottom for the 1/4 inch plywood bottom). And sometimes I just use butt joints and Dominos for strength and ease of putting them together.

I'm always amazed at how many things you are not supposed to do at your own house because of permits. I get that the laws are there to protect the next owner but it's crazy when you feel like it's your house but you need a permit for the simplest thing. And the worst part is that it's so hard to figure out what is okay to do and what's not.
