Trained in C, familiar with C++ and Java, spent the last 10 or so years mostly in scripting (perl, shell, etc) with a little php/ajax/js on the side. I've been running linux on just about all my systems for over 5 years, and at least partially using it since '95, mostly with Debian and now Ubuntu. Lately I'm getting back into a project using C, maybe Lua, front end with php/ajax/js, and who knows what else.

Outside of the techie stuff, I enjoy photography as a hobby and do a lot of home repair both on my own home and with the local Habitat chapter. For fun, I strap the bare necessities onto my back and enjoy a weekend of backpacking.

comment Do I need to caulk where my vinyl siding meets the edge of my windows?
Agreed. The vinyl around the windows is referred to as J-channel. It gets installed from bottom up so that all the overlapped edges channel water away from the home.

comment What should I use to seal around the perimeter of a tile floor?
Sounds like you may be describing installing the tile after the baseboard was already installed. That's the wrong order, the tile goes down and the baseboard goes on top where it covers the gap between the tile and wall. The only thing you might caulk is under the baseboard but that's not the OP's question.

@user19614 There are lots of gaps behind parts of your home that you can't see that are filled with dirt. It's pretty standard to find that during any renovation, but shouldn't affect your home since it's under/behind the baseboard where the gap isn't visible. Grouting all the way up to the wall framing under the drywall seems like a waste of grout and adds a lot of work to anyone that wants to replace the flooring in the future.

-1 good info but isn't answering the OP's question where they have baseboard covering the gap rather than two tile surfaces meeting.

@user19614 why would a space that is concealed by the baseboard be an issue? Hardwood floors leave a space here for expansion, carpet leaves a space there for stretching the carpet, why is tile any different?

comment Kitchen Remodel Order
The flooring under the cabinets seems to be frequent topic of disagreement. I've seen advice both ways. Two advantages of flooring after cabinets are: first you don't need to protect the flooring during most of the other steps, and second any time you replace the cabinets, you almost always replace the flooring, but if you replace the flooring you don't necessarily want to replace the cabinets and countertops.

If there's no water in the trap, then it's not working correctly or you have a venting problem. There should always be water in the trap to keep sewer gases from entering your home.

-1 because this is worded as a story rather than an answer to the OP's problem. Please focus on the problem and steps required to resolve the question being asked.
