An update, since I know you're all dying for one: for ceilings we pulled some down where electrical or plumbing work needed to be done, and for the rest laminated with 1/2" drywall. For the walls we skim coated. Because there were so many to do we hired a drywall company to do the work. It was very messy, but since we're not living in the house yet it wasn't an imposition. We're very happy with the results so far.

I can think of a practical difference in braided versus solid wire: a much better connection when fitting the wire into banana plugs. I think I'll re-run the wire with 16 gauge stranded... I originally went with 18 because the speakers I got have comically small spring clips, but I think I can make 16 work. The run is about 30 feet for the farther speaker. Thanks for the great description.

The kitchen is a total gut job, and the electricians ran the speaker wire for us while they were doing the heavier duty work.

comment How best can I seal up an old coal door?
I like the idea, but unfortunately this is right against our driveway (hence the asphalt) and I'm not sure I can spare the space for a window well there. The grading is pretty good and there certainly isn't a rush of water in that way, but there is some daylight and water making it through the top part of the door.

+1 for the link to Principles of Air Conditioning. A great explanation of how the system works.
