I'm a technologist available for hire in the West of England.
I've done a few different things over the last few years: currently I'm at Global Radio in Reading, having fun with AWS and some frankly strange quadratic equations. Previously I was with Nokia Entertainment in Bristol, optimising how music files are ingested and transcoded.
It's not all music: before that I worked with www.doccom.me, helping doctors communicate with each other, creating a mobile version of their site and adding an OData API.
And before that, amongst other things, I was the Product Marketing Manager in Europe for Borland Delphi.

What are my options for replacing 50W GU10 lightbulbs? TomG: fair to say as well that the technology has improved over the last two years! |

How do I install a bathroom wall light? Suggest you get /three/ quotes -- some trades will try to stiff DIYers. I've had wildly different quotes for this sort of thing. |

How can I remove old paint from plaster walls? It's a lot of work for an amateur, but skim coats are one of the few jobs where it's worth getting in an expert. A good plasterer can do a large room, and ceiling, in a few hours. |

What's the most economical way to remove a wood stove? Sounds harsh -- can you have a surveyor prove that it's a reasonable distance from non-combustible materials? Alternatively, can you negotiate an exclusion on the policy? With the price of fuel, a woodstove is really quite an economical option... |

What's a good way to seal a flat concrete roof? A year on and record rain last month -- so far, so good! |

How do I fix a hole in drywall? Jon's answer is great, but you want to consider stopping the hole reappearing. I'd suggest you affix a doorstop to either the floor, the wall or the door... |

What are the advantages and disadvantage of using “pushfit” pipe fittings? A little bit under a sink is fine, but a long run along a wall looks ugly to me. Your mileage may, however, vary. |

What are the advantages and disadvantage of using “pushfit” pipe fittings? Here "exposed" means "on view" - i.e. not buried in the wall or under a floor or a ceiling void. |

Under UK Building Codes are you allowed to add an additional stopcock? In practice it's hard to replace the main indoor stopcock without turning off the outdoor one! We recently had exactly that situation; I played it safe and had a plumber sort out the problem. |

Why will my pilot light on the gas water heater not stay lit for more than 15 minutes? @Crystal: I've had a thermocouple fail in exactly this way - the boiler stayed lit for a few minutes, then went out. Suggest it's time to call a plumber/engineer, a thermocouple shouldn't be too expensive as they fail fairly often. |

Fast, easy and simple construction of a log store And that is indeed what I used to rather good effect. Rather than use pallets, I used six-foot fence panels, and a rough-and-ready pitched roof made of OSB3 board with roofing felt over. The floor is made of treated boards a foot or so off the ground with an inch gap between them for air. So far, so good -- it's down in the trees so it seems unlikely to blow away unless I'm really unlucky. |

What's a good way to seal a flat concrete roof? The roofer starts next month - it got worse again in a couple of rainstorms before Christmas, so we've saved up for this job to be done professionally. |
