I have lived in in Georgia, France and Vermont. I have lived in and repaired tens of houses along the way. I have learned most of what I know from my mom, a true DIY-er. My experience runs from foundation work to faux painting to cabinet construction.

+1 for simplicity and not overworking the solution. Non-load bearing is the key.

How would you do this, crawl inside with newspaper and tape? Seems like a over worked problem? Whats wrong with letting them get dirty? Yes, I get that you don't want to have to clean it out all the time, but like Shane said, their just isn't anything else, especially anything biodegradable.

it depends, do you have access to "pre-fab fiberglass three part garage door" parts, or are you doing some cutting?

comment Reducing Attic Fire Risk
To answer your question we will either need a picture or the name of the insulation. Was it cellulose, cotton, wool, wood shavings, recycled glass or Spray foam poly urethane insulation. The latter requires that other fire retardants be used in conjunction with this insulation such as sheetrock.

No answer yet... If you can post a pic I might be able to understand better the relationship of the plastic board to the drain and the concrete. Perhaps you can get an answer that way?

I don't know for sure, but auto wax sounds like the wrong thing. Think porosity, metal vs wood. I'd wait for a good answer. If there isn't a answer on this by this time tmw, I'll my contractor buddy.

comment Is it OK to block off an unused root cellar to mitigate moisture problems?
Do the pipes have any control surfaces on them, knobs, switches, or anything like that? Also is there a reason to wall it up, like children or pets you don't want getting in there?
