comment How can I winterize windows with original trim from 1885 without ruining them?
Also, please consider repairing those windows instead of replacing, when that time comes. There's tons of info online on restoring and weatherizing old windows. Properly restored old window with a storm will be pretty much as efficient as any new vinyl crap.

comment How can I tell if these pipes are gas pipes or water pipes?
Those are most likely hot water heat supply and return pipes. It wouldn't make sense to run two parallel gas lines unless this is a multi family with separate meters. In any case, I see a union on one of the pipes. It's not recommended to have those inside the walls, so that's another reason to cap or remove the pipes

comment How do I fix my “OLD” glass door knobs?
The main reason they are failing is probably because mostly anything that is sold in stores today is of very low quality compared to the vintage hardware. You can find higher quality stuff, but it would have to be commercial grade and at a premium cost

comment For new construction, which flooring is greener: laminate or engineered?
Why not just go for real solid hardwood? It will outlast any imitators and can be easily refinished and repaired. Compare that to laminate which can't be refinished at all, and to engineered wood which has very limited potential for repair

If this will require a "professional", you might be able to save some good cash if you do the demo and cleanup yourself.

comment My plumber installed my hot water baseboard backward. The feed and return are hooked up backward. What problems will this cause?
What makes you think the baseboard has feed and return? Every baseboard(as well as radiator) I've ever seen in a forced hot water system couldn't care less how it's connected. If it was just installed and doesn't heat up, the it is probably air bound and needs to be bled. Have the plumber come back and double check for that

comment Why would my water taste like plastic fumes?
If I understand correctly, the sink doesn't have a built in faucet or anything like that. Old faucet with old pipes were used. I don't see how anything could affect water. I wonder if you are just smelling residual odor of the sink(like while the glass is filled, the sink odor surrounds it)
