comment Converting from Oil to Gas heat. Any recommendations?
We're also making the same change from oil to gas. This is the right advice -- have your HVAC contractor visit and do a "heat loss calculation" -- an estimate of what heat output will be required to keep your house warm on the coldest day of the year in your climate, based on the size of your house, number of windows, types of insulation, etc. For efficiency, you'll want the minimal size that can keep your house warm, with perhaps a little extra in case you build an addition. :)

comment Is it okay that a Leviton 9860-LHG CFL lampholder has no ground wire?
Good answer. Again, a junction box only needs to be grounded if it is conductive (metal) -- one perk of using PVC boxes is that you don't need to ground them.

comment What could cause the water from melting snow off a roof to be yellow?
I had a similar problem and believe it was caused by rotting leaves in my rain gutter (eaves trough). Turns out the gutter rounds a corner near where I saw the yellowish icicles, and during a recent rain I noticed that corner seam leaking a lot. So I think the water mixed with decaying gunk in the gutter, leaked out, and perhaps ran along the bottom of the gutter.

Awesome, this will come in handy! Link to the product at Home Depot: homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202204326/h_d2/…

comment How do I repair/reattach downspout and gutter after snow/ice damage?
Thanks. What about for the downspout? Does it only need to be secured to the gutter's drain, or should there be other pieces to help carry the weight of the downspout along its height?

What sort of fasteners? Just regular sheet metal screws, or is there something specifically for downspouts/gutters? Also, should there be anything other than the gutter fastener vertically supporting the downspout? Right now it has a couple of aluminum straps but I think they only prevent it from moving away from the house, and don't prevent it sliding down if iced over.

Great answer, shirlock! There are some remnants of knob & tube here, but no live k&t thankfully. I also discovered remnant pipes for gas lights, also disconnected, in the attic.

Cool idea. I'm curious, though, how can one drill all the way through 80" of door in a straight line?
