In my dim and distant past I did get a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and I do love to build and modify any house I get my hands on to make it more suitable for a family's needs:-)
I worked as a builder a couple of times as well, once doing houses/apartments and once doing aluminium furnaces

Why won't my gas water heater light? @bib - oh, absolutely. I'm qualified to look at the electrics, but I'm not going near gas...until I get my Pyro licence for my on-stage work :-) |

Why is the drywall in my garage sagging? Updated - it has been 20 years since I did it, so I'm quite prepared to believe things have moved on. Thanks |

Why is the drywall in my garage sagging? Interesting point on the screws - when I worked in the building trade we never used screws for sheetrock/drywall - only sheetrock nails (wide headed nails). I'll update on the distance though - 24" is the maximum we used to use, but closer is obviously better |

How can I air-condition a garage without modifying it? use a gasket at the top. you will need to block heat re-entry where you can, otherwise you will just waste money. |

Is a gas water heater safe in a bedroom? @MikePowell it's not the consumption of O2 as such - it's the production of CO, which can be fatal in very low concentrations |

In my sink pop-up stopper, the tip of the pivot rod is broken, how do I fix it? I have seen two setups - one with the spring clip on the left of the strap, and one with a clip on both sides. I wouldn't expect it to be very tight, but it shouldn't be so loose that it comes apart. |

In my sink pop-up stopper, the tip of the pivot rod is broken, how do I fix it? On mine the ball is not fixed to the rod, so you can pull it all the way through. |

Is it necessary to replace lead gas pipes? No - actually they are pretty good in buildings, as they are soft enough that as walls or areas shift, the pipes flex. It isn't that easy to accidentally damage them. |

What do I level a 2" slope in my concrete basement floor? For the second part of your question - is it surface painted, or does the colour go all the way through the concrete. If it is surface painted, a grinder or solvent will remove it. |

Are radiator reflectors as effective as claimed? really interesting question - I have been checking out online info sources and it seems there is very little to support my initial thought that they would be effective. It seems a much more important requirement is increasing airflow and turbulence past the radiators. |

Can I replace / recreate a tri-fold garage door with three fiberglass flush doors? @PeterQ - how did you go with this? If you installed them you could always add an answer here listing the pros and cons. |

How do I increase the height of a sliding glass door lock? When you say raising, do you mean vertically away from the floor, or horizontally away from the glass towards the room? I can't understand how your image matches up with your description. |

Installing a ceiling fan into a socket with 3 wires jammed into the socket Does that screw in the middle go into a joist or ceiling member? If so, that might be sufficient for support. |

Should I remove vinyl flooring before laying down hardwood? And for bits that are stuck fast, a hairdryer loosens them that little bit. |

Is it necessary to replace lead gas pipes? The reason it is treated differently to lead water pipes is that gas pipes should not have water content, so lead will not be dissolved and enter drinking water etc. |
