Taping (as opposed to sheet metal screws that penetrate into the airflow) is the best method to join sections of duct. The screws hook lint like a magnet grabs steel filings.

A finger or a joint smoother (sold for filleting caulk joints) run just behind the caulk tip (done concurrently will keep it from falling off) and pushing the caulk in. For rough wood, you'll need a leather glove to prevent splinters

Probably need the relay to control a contactor, which will do the actual cutout. Another thought: A generator transfer switch has all the components and the design testing for peace of mind. If you transfer to a non-existent generator, you shut the panel off...
