comment Framing a wall over a carpeted floor
Would also suggest treated lumber for floor contact in basement (or slab-on-grade). Sill sealer is also a good idea: it breaks capillary action. Also leave drywall gapped above floor for same reason(3/8 to 1/2)

comment How to repair a giant hole in plaster over drywall (maybe ?)
Agree on backing support and drywall backfill. I would leave it slightly depressed from main surface (1/8 to 1/4) and do a first skim coat with hot mud (setting joint compound) to flush. When firm, topping or general purpose premixed joint compound to overcoat both patch and existing wall.

comment Should I set wooden porch pillars into, or on to concrete footings?
A small addition: soak the post bottoms in a preservative /water repellant. This is especially true on the cut ends of pretreated posts.

All what you said, PLUS the frequency is listed 460 Hz (must be a typo for 60HZ) not available in residential power.

comment What do you call a widget that holds the side of a curtain against a wall?
What where they originally created for? Do they go back to ship rigging or is it more modern?

Either should work. If the existing coat(s) show no sign of charring, you should be good. I would lean to an epoxy for both heat and wear, but the self cross linking resins in the water borne oils are tough.

comment Baseboard lumber choices for staining
Dyes on splotchy wood should finely sprayed and allowed to dry with no manual "handling". This will let the coloring penetrate evenly.. As soon as you move it on the wood surface, some areas will get more dye, causing the splotch. I usually leave the color a bit light and seal with shellac. Additional color can be glazed with a gel stain, if desired. A water borne poly makes a good top coat.
