comment Is the Nest thermostat smart enough to turn itself on BEFORE you get home?
@Ecnerwal - just wanted to add that I don't have a Nest thermostat, and don't have any plans to get one. So there!

comment Is the Nest thermostat smart enough to turn itself on BEFORE you get home?
@Ecnerwal - sorry, I wasn't clear enough. Point A depends on the outside temperature. If it's warmer the inside temperature may not get down to the nighttime set point, so you don't need to start reheating as soon.

@Ecnerwal - the time needed to get from point A to point B depends on where point A is. The thermostat can do a better job of figuring out the lead time because "knows" where it's starting out.

How did you determine that it's putting out AC?

comment Frozen Pipe(s) — How to Respond?
One winter when I lived in Scotts Valley, CA, (south of San Jose) we had an unusual cold snap and many people's pipes froze. Having no experience with this kind of thing, some people called the police. Your mileage may vary.

comment Should the fill line be removed when decommissioning an old oil tank?
That's why there's an outlet pipe that whistles as the oil gets pumped in. No whistle, stop pumping!

comment Can I reuse a live rodent trap?
I once set out a live trap for a mouse, baited with a peanut butter granola bar. Caught the mouse, took it outside a couple of hundred yards from the house, and released it. Two days later it was back. Set out the same trap, same bait; caught it and took it two miles away. It hasn't been back since.
