Sorry updated above. They are travertine tiles. I think the best solution in my case is just to pull off the drywall and put up hardiboard.

A is the cam. B is the connecting bolt. You would be using a screwdriver (or anything that fits) through the hole that B is in. This a perpendicular hole to the cam.

I am going to contact the manufacturer to find out what explain the finish. The door is on the north side of the property and recessed a couple feet so it doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight. Humidity is high though, being in Houston.
