comment Is it necessary to keep tools lubricated?
It depends on how you treat and where you store your tools. For the average person, the worst condition their tools will experience is the boat ride from China and the drilled out hinge point is typically the only area of metal uncoated so it is oiled before shipping. Now if we get away from hand tools especially talking about pneumatic tools then yeah, almost all should be oiled regularly.

comment How can I confirm a skunk inhabitation, and then persuade the stinky squatter to vacate?
Ammonia near the den should drive them away. The park center near me uses that when they get to close to the buildings.

comment How do I seal a garden hose against a nipple?
If you were able to get if off without cutting the hose, you probably bought the wrong size.

comment What is the correct way to install a washing machine drain pan?
ugliness shouldn't be a huge factor with a washing machine sitting on top of it . The next owners will think you were crazy but you'll either be dead or have their money so who cares.

comment What is the correct way to install a washing machine drain pan?
Not really, you can probably find something that happens to be the right size or find it online but it is generically a bad idea and off item so it won't be stocked locally.

What material is your drain pipe? Does it already have threads on the end?

comment Plumber told me it's unsafe to drain my water heater — what should I do?
Where is it leaking from? Turning off the cold water supply shuts off the main pressure but you'll still have the pressure of all the water weight so it makes sense that your leak won't magically stop. If you're going to replace it and your relief valve has a hose bib, you can safely drain it out of the house no problem

@ChrisCudmore, yes or used in lighted, smart, etc. switches that require power.

comment How can I calculate the number of solar panels required to power a specific load?
Rated power on a lot of newer solar panels are now rated at an average WattHour per day and have a scale for regions, not just max Wattage. But this does still only calculate the bare minimum and doesn't take loss in line voltage, storage capabilities, nor inverting.

Fair warning, this will probably cost you a fee.

comment Can I add a pendant fixture to ceiling fan?
Can you please reword your question to more of a technical question. We cannot help you (much) with the specifics laws and regulations in a renting situation. A large number of ceiling fans come pre-wired to accept a light add-on but with no details and/or specific question I cannot provide anymore help.

comment Can you tell from this frame if it is a nonbearing wall?
The framing definitely looks like it's a add-on room divider. I can also see that you've got 3-prong outlets so the electrical has been upgraded or you're not to code, when was the last time the house was renovated? Can you measure the lumber itself, if it is 1.75" 2x4s then it is much more modern than 1900, still could be load-bearing from a renovation but would provide us with more insight to the situation.

comment How do I mount this box without drilling or damaging the shelf?
You didn't get the idea, the female end of the zip tie only goes where a screw head would go so the box will only have a the long male end/tail sticking out. You'd then need to use another zip tie to do anything with it.

comment How do I mount this box without drilling or damaging the shelf?
Can you include a picture of your shelf? Zip/cable tie come in a variety of size but most residential use one happen to have a head that will slip into the screw mounting slot, this will give you two zip ties sticking out the bottom but opens up some mounting options that you may be able to use.

comment How best can I seal up an old coal door?
Personally, I'd fill it with >2lb polyurethane foam. Most 2lb density foam is considered open cell where higher densities are closed cell and will provide a much better long term absolute seal. That also relies on using a 2 part mix cured in the hole, not a foam block cut to size.

comment Why will 26 1.2W 220V LED lights not work with an 800W inverter?
Is your inverter 800W continuous or 800W peak? The peak ratings could easily be a bit lower than advertised.
