comment How can plywood edges be finished to conceal the plies?
You will want to predrill for screws. There are also specialty screws designed specifically for MDF if you want to go down that road. Moisture should not be an issue so long as you have a couple of coats of paint.

comment What is the best way to seal my deck?
This is solid advice for a typical pressure treated lumber deck. It appears this particular question is referring to a hardwood deck, which would likely require altering these instructions (e.g. non-oxygen based stripper, stain choices, etc.)

comment Vinyl tile installation over a concrete basement floor with moisture
When I looked into it a while ago, it seemed like there were many complaints about mold growth on Dricore. Something to look into if you are considering it.

You also have to be concerned about the MDF splitting when you are screwing into the edge.

comment Dado (+glue) or just screws (+glue) for painted MDF bookcase
Thinking about it, the statement about the strength advantage is probably not entirely accurate for MDF. Edge screwing into plywood or solid wood provides poor "pull-apart" strength. For MDF, there is really not a significant difference in this number. However, the pocket joint will still be advantageous in this case. The screw head will not "mushroom" the edge around the countersink, and the pocket screws tend to pull a joint tight without extra clamping.

comment Is it safe to drill small holes in load-bearing concrete beams for expansion bolts?
If the beam is metal, then you could try some large neodymium magnets (e.g. amazon.com/Applied-Magnets-Strong-Neodymium-Magnet/dp/…)

It could also be an AAV failure. Was this bathroom added as part of a remodel?

Does it smell if you turn on the blower without the heat?

comment Why don't programmable thermostats automatically switch between “Cool” and “Heat”?
You also have to worry about the outside temp. If you had a fireplace lit, and that caused the ambient temp around the thermostat to be too high, it could kick on the a/c. If it were freezing outside, it could end up damaging your a/c system.

comment Adding AC to forced air system
I have a similar house (1200 sqft, 2 floors + basement). My only return vent is on the main floor. The central air was added to the house some time in the past. In general, it keeps up pretty well. The upstairs will be slightly warmer than the main floor, but not too bad. We have our thermostat scheduled to shut down the central a/c at night, and then we use window units in the bedrooms upstairs to keep them cool for sleeping.

comment Workarounds for single-zone HVAC? Second thermostat? Adjust vents?
+1 for the window units. That's the solution I have for now until I can retrofit some dampers (or do a complete overhaul).

comment Should I Get My Bathtub Refinished?
For a standard tub, you will have to weigh the costs. If you can do the work yourself, then you can likely install a brand new tub for under $400.

comment Dowel joints in plywood
FYI: For plywood, they recommend using the coarse thread pocket screws. So, for 3/4 plywood, you would use 1 1/4" Coarse Thread pocket screws.

comment What is the easiest way to remove a large root in a post hole I'm digging?
Be sure to call JULIE before digging in Illinois. I learned that the hard way a couple weeks ago. Hit my gas supply line with a reciprocating saw while trying to dig out a root.
