What could cause a bad oil-like smell every time the heat is on? Does it smell if you turn on the blower without the heat? |

Why don't programmable thermostats automatically switch between “Cool” and “Heat”? You also have to worry about the outside temp. If you had a fireplace lit, and that caused the ambient temp around the thermostat to be too high, it could kick on the a/c. If it were freezing outside, it could end up damaging your a/c system. |

Adding AC to forced air system I have a similar house (1200 sqft, 2 floors + basement). My only return vent is on the main floor. The central air was added to the house some time in the past. In general, it keeps up pretty well. The upstairs will be slightly warmer than the main floor, but not too bad. We have our thermostat scheduled to shut down the central a/c at night, and then we use window units in the bedrooms upstairs to keep them cool for sleeping. |

Workarounds for single-zone HVAC? Second thermostat? Adjust vents? +1 for the window units. That's the solution I have for now until I can retrofit some dampers (or do a complete overhaul). |

Should I Get My Bathtub Refinished? For a standard tub, you will have to weigh the costs. If you can do the work yourself, then you can likely install a brand new tub for under $400. |

Dowel joints in plywood FYI: For plywood, they recommend using the coarse thread pocket screws. So, for 3/4 plywood, you would use 1 1/4" Coarse Thread pocket screws. |

What is the easiest way to remove a large root in a post hole I'm digging? Be sure to call JULIE before digging in Illinois. I learned that the hard way a couple weeks ago. Hit my gas supply line with a reciprocating saw while trying to dig out a root. |
