comment Should I set fence posts in dirt, gravel, crushed rock, or concrete?
I had a farm in Michigan for 12 years, and built and replaced many fences for myself and neighbors, and the best methods I observed from older fences and my own trials were treated lumber posts and crushed limestone to secure. Also, painting the posts with an exterior paint helped them last longer, protecting them from the sun's UV waves. I've replaced fences with treated posts that were 20 years old and below grade were in like-new condition sitting in dirt, and above grade they were rotted/punky from UV degradation.
