I'm building a cabin at the lake. Although I know I'll need single phase 120 volt and 240 volt electrical for some things, I'd like the entire cabin to be illuminated by low voltage lights, inside and out. Don't know much about it other than the basic 2 wire system I had in my RV (replaced all the lights in it, yet they are too small for a home I believe), plus I have installed thousands of feet of landscape lighting (and these too are not practical for inside the house, I believe). So When I start to install the basic single phase electrical, I also want to run whatever wiring I need to install for 12 volt dc lighting throughout the cabin (unless you believe 12 volt dc is not the best choice?) and find a great place to buy the correct light fixtures. I'll also have lots of sky lights. I hope to run low voltage lighting all around the cabin and in some trees and walk ways. Lastly whatever you may suggest, I'd like it to work with a combination wind/solar power and a battery bank (maybe 6 marine batteries from Optima, the Blue battery). Stephen

One problem with DC is that you'll have to worry about the polarity when connecting any device. Also consider that the lower the voltage, the higher the current necessary to get the same power, meaning you'll need thicker wires than if it were 120V. – fceconel Jul 25 '13 at 23:21

Low Voltage indoor wiring is under the NEC (National Electric Code) ARTICLE 411 Lighting Systems Operating at 30 Volts or Less. This is a DIY/Home Improvement Question, i.e. ASK A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN, especially since you are wiring a cabin from scratch. – cde Jul 26 '13 at 3:37
What do you hope to achieve with 12v lighting that cannot be achieved with conventional 120v lighting? I'm more curious about your reasoning than questioning your choice, though there's some of that as well. – bcworkz Jul 26 '13 at 21:07
