What would cause a drumming/xylophone noise heard all throughout the house? It will last for about 1 minute and sounds like a fast drumming with the same pattern of 4 distinct low xylophone notes each time.

Anything else happening in the house around the same time, like heating just turned on or off, showers running? These can cause thermal expansion in water pipes or air ducts that can make pinging and popping noises like what you describe. – Niall C. Feb 3 '13 at 16:08
is it a mechanical sound or electronic? – DA01 Feb 3 '13 at 16:39
It happens in the middle of the night too, so I can assume it is not the water pipes. I'll have to notice if it coincides with the heat or a/c turning on. – Mark Allen Feb 3 '13 at 18:26
Mechanical versus electronic. – Mark Allen Feb 3 '13 at 18:27
