I've got a small space I'd like to illuminate using a low-profile, ceiling-mounted fixture like these from Leviton. But those are incredibly ugly—not something I'd want to install anywhere except a garage or basement storage space.

Does anyone know of other low-profile (under 3" high) CFL or LED fixtures available for a reasonable price (under $100 US, ideally under $50 US) and that aren't so unattractive and industrial-looking?

I used a couple low-profile circular florescent bulb fixture in my laundry room, and they work great.

I don't remember the exact model I got, but they were from a big box store and definitely under $100. The ones I have are 13x3" and take two bulbs (I have only ever installed one bulb in each -- more than enough), but they make smaller diameter ones as well.

Search for something like "round florescent fixture" and you'll find a few products and sellers online, or visit your local stores.

Check out builders.com They have a complete lighting section with thousands of fixtures in many price ranges. – shirlock homes Jul 24 '12 at 10:48

If you have space to install a recessed can light, there are numerous possibilities under $100. Old work recessed cans can be installed through a cutout in the wallboard ceiling if there is access to a power source above it. Take a look at the can and LED in one combos such as this.
