I was awoke by a chemical smell from my electric hot water heater. The past two weeks I noticed my shower was not getting/staying very hot during my 10 minute showers. Thinking not too much about it, I didn't do anything. Now this smell. I went out to the breaker and turned it off and turned off the valve. I have fans running to help with the smell, because it was leaking. I assume it needs replacing. However, since turning off the valve, my adjacent shower faucet won't stop running. How could these two be related? I moved in to this home nearly two years ago. There were a lot of things done half-assed, so my mind immediately goes to that.

You turned off the valve to the hot water tank, and now you can't turn off the shower? – Tester101♦ May 22 '12 at 16:28
Yes. The shower was off, but water was running out of it. I replaced the entire shower valve and that stopped it. So weird though how it never did it before this hot water heater issue... – K.G. May 23 '12 at 11:36
