I live on the 2nd floor of a small block of flats. I have noticed a crack outside by the one window. I read on the forum that if its only plaster deep its not too serious. This one looks like it could be bad. We get a lot of wind and rain hear in Cape Town RSA. I will try to attach a photo, if anyone can see how if its serious or what?

What material is the wall made of (I don't see the picture)? Do you get freezing cycles in Cape Town? – auujay Feb 13 '12 at 17:46

Generally speaking, a wall crack is something normal, due to natural settlement.

However it's not something to underestimate.

Vertical wall cracks usually indicates much more serious troubles than horizontal cracks.

Certainly, a deep crack is ALWAYS a huge "alarm bell".
