Can anybody recommend a good steam cleaner for general household use? I looked at reviews on Amazon, and it seems that for most models half the people love it and half the people were disappointed and wanted to return theirs.

Requests for specific product recommendations are not a good fit for this site. A better fit might be a question like "What features of a steam cleaner are most important?". – Jeff Widmer Nov 30 '11 at 12:08
Moderators (@JeffWidmer, @NiallC, and @Tester101) - What's the difference between my question and question 2847 which is tagged with "product-recommendation"? I've seen several others that fall into the same category, some of which I've found quite useful. I tend to trust the judgment of DIY users more than I trust users of other sites. – andrewl Nov 30 '11 at 22:33

I think the difference is a year of growth on the site. More things were allowed when it was first starting and we'd probably close 2847 if it was asked today. – BMitch Dec 1 '11 at 14:52

Also, most product-recommendation questions are of the form "does a product exist that does X" or "can anyone recommend a type of product over another". Recommending a steam cleaner gets into a brand recommendation. Brand recommendations would be better for Consumer Reports since they can buy and review all the major brands where we can only advise on the one or two brands that we have personally used. – BMitch Dec 1 '11 at 14:58
I agree with @BMitch that probably the question you reference would be closed if it was asked today. That question could have been written differently though too such as "Should I go with a cordless or wired drill?". – Jeff Widmer Dec 1 '11 at 15:49
